Candles: Candles have only recently gained popularity in rituals because they were expensive and hard to come by in the past. Modern candles are mostly made out of paraffin wax, though beeswax, barberry or candelilla are thought to be more powerful. The color, shape and size of the candle is important when using in a ritual or spell. The following is a brief guideline for choosing colors: · Black – Most powerful when performing magic. Fertility, luck, healing and repelling hexes · Blue – Protection and against evil · Brown – Karma, justice and grounding · Green – Money, prosperity, success, fertility and growth · Pink – Friendship and romance · Purple – Sex and dominance · Red – Love, sex, passion and romance · White/Ivory – Clarity, cleansing, healing, lunar spells and creativity · Yellow/Gold – Power, prosperity and romance Shape and size depends on the type of spell. If the candle must burn down during the ritual, then a smaller candle should be chosen. If the spell will take several sessions, then a larger size would be needed. Most spells require a taper 8 to 10 inch candle. Some love spells can be performed with candles that are made into the shape of a male or female. Incense: Burning incense during incantations or while creating potions and herbs is used to saturate the environment with magical smoke. The aroma enters the body and soul and brings special significance. Myrrh is believed to bring goodness and scare away evil or negative forces.
