Text Box: Details of Tarot Cards

Tarot cards suddenly appeared in Europe in the 1300’s, believed to be brought from the Middle East to Spain.  These cards consisted of cups, swords, coins, and polo sticks (seen by Europeans as staves). It wasn’t until the 15th century that Tarot was used for divination purposes throughout Europe.   The earlier suits are still preserved in the tarot and in Italian and Spanish playing cards today.  It is surprising that Tarot did not gain popularity in the United States until the 20th century. The only available information was found in the Spanish, Italian, Jewish and German communities.  The cards that are directly descended from Italy and France are the Scapini and Palladini and Mersailles decks.    The most popular cards historically in America, are the Rider-Waite and Thoth Crowley cards.  These cards are all sought after for their authenticity and nostalgia and all of these are available at SpellSpace.  The Tarot Reader from SpellSpace uses her original well worn cards, the Tarot of the Old Path.

As the popularity has increased, many enthusiasts have created their own version of cards and thus there is an abundance of cards to choose from.  Whether you want to collect tarot cards, or simply like to use a different deck depending on the circumstance and mood, it is fun to choose the perfect deck.  A tarot reader should seek a deck of card that calls out to them and that a connection is felt.  Cards are never shared between tarot readers, their cards are as personal as ones under garments.     Take a look at our catalog of cards, and send us an email if there are other decks you are interested in.
